My 4 best coin finds, IMO, since I started swingin' the coil back in March of 2012. In the last pic, I am speaking of the 1897 Barber Half, not the other coins (although I really like them too.)

1799 Spanish 1/2 Reale
1800 Draped bust 1/2 Cent
1825 Capped Bust Dime
Tie for 4th...1897 Barber Half & 1870 Shield Nickel

Okay, I'll bite :)

My finds aren't as amazing or historic as the ones above :shocked04: :clapping: but they are the ones that are special to me.

#1 is the very first coin I ever found with a metal detector, on my first ever detecting trip years ago. I had a new ACE250. Stupidly and having zero knowledge of detecting, I took the ACE250 to a large piece of rural land (110 acres) in Iowa that I owned at the time. There had never been a dwelling on this land at any time - most of it was native prairie ground. I had to burn off the prairie ground every year (for CRP and for regrowth of the original prairie), which is why I could detect it at all.

However, an old train track did run through it. I had not even tested the detector with a coin, and had never found ANY coin with it, not even a zlincoln.

That day I dug a TON of iron (railroad ties mostly, and hunks of railroad track). At the end of the day I got a strong signal at about 6 inches, and I dug this 1847 seated half dollar. :)

It's not a rare date and it has some issues (although it does have full liberty) but it was quite the first coin. :) At the time I didn't even appreciate it - I remember thinking Wow, if I can find this here in the middle of nowhere, I'm going to find tons of these in parks! lol rofl :hysterical: :cheesysmile: :crying02: How stupid I was. :)

Chalk one up to dumb luck lol

Sorry for the bad photo; my camera isn't charged so I snapped this earlier with my phone.

#2 is an 1854 seated half dime I found while detecting at an old park in the northeast with a friend several years ago. At the time, I didn't even know what it was - had never seen a half dime lol (now I collect them :) ) This one isn't perfect by any means but it is very special. In fact that day was my detecting dream come true :) I hope to have another such day someday! The second photo are all the silver coins that my friend and I found in total that amazing day.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc224/epi-hunter/finds4july4.jpg

#3 is a story only, as I no longer have a photo (it died with my last laptop) - or the find itself.

During the only 20 minutes I have ever used my Tesoro Tiger Shark (on a freshwater beach) I found a woman's diamond ring in the wet sand. :) It had no inscription, but I put an ad out.

I was surprised, but the woman who lost it was able to describe it down to the last detail and even sent me a wedding photo of the ring. Due to distance I wasn't able to return it personally but I sent it to her.

She called me and she was in tears. It did touch me. :)

Her husband called me later and said he wanted to give me $500 as a reward (I refused).

#4 is this little baby trime I found in an older Lexington, Kentucky park about a year ago. If any of you have ever seen these in person - they are beyond small... very thin, and and only a couple of centimeters in diameter. I was happy to find such a tiny coin in a park that has left me with several silverless trips both before and since. :)

Excellent post Lee. I have been detecting for about 5 years now and have made some pretty good finds. Trying to narrow them down to the top 4 is tough, but here are my selections.

1. 1838 Seated Liberty dime - - Small Stars variety. Had this one graded by NGC XF Details Improperly Cleaned
Found this in a corn fileld along with many other seated coins.

2. Militia Belt Plate (my avatar) - -Made WE&T Best Finds 2008

3. Button - -1803 - 1823 Made by Aaron Merrill Peasley, Boston. Backmark AMP Boston.
I think that this is Tice MS042, (Albert's MS46) Ancient & Honorable Artillery, low convex, one piece.

4. General Grant paperweight - -Thought to have been made around 1880. The reason that I picked this item is that I am willing to
bet that it will be the only one dug on any forum.....

I started detecting about 20 months ago so here we go.
Tough to follow up with some of those beautiful finds but.... if I can only list four then they would be the following:

My all time favorite to date would have to be my 1778 Machin's Mills Half Pence. I love the detail on her and the fact that it was considered an imitation colonial copper really intrigued me.
[attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3][attachimg=4]

My second choice would have to be my 1700's pewter sundial simply because it is so unique
[attachimg=5]

My third choice is also unique in that it is a Brass Badge that was made for a one time event for the Celebration( in 1900 )of the Civil War battle between two civil war ships called the Kearsarge ,which was built in Porstmouth NH, and the Alabama. These badges were worn only buy presenter's of this event. Only a few are known to exist.
[attachimg=6][attachimg=7]

My fourth and final was really difficult to decide. It was between my complete 1700's knee buckle, an 1800's Fruit Knife and my Flying Eagle Cent. Gun to my head...I would go with my 1857 Flying Eagle. Simply because they were only minted for three years and are considered fairly hard to find metal detecting.

Wow what great things have been shown! My favorites are this 1912-D Barber Half it took my breath away when I saw it in the hole

[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]

Next is a beautiful 1818 Large Cent a scarce variant and in wonderful condition

[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=4]

Next is a very nice Hard Times Token dated 1837

[attachimg=5]

[attachimg=6]

And the most favorite of all my finds is a 1796 Draped Bust Large Cent

This years top 4 finds was a hard pick. Went with the sword hanger from the late 1700s ( TYPE OF MARKINGS MAKES IT THE EARLY VERITY ) seeing it could have seen rev war action, then the tomback because I love tombacks seeing they are colonial and this one is my best ever, the 1712 pretender two reale is awesome only because it's a pretender and sir Isaac Newton most likely had something to do with it, and how could ya not like a hole buckle. Was a tough call but these kinda finds are more rare to find than some. These are some of my favorite finds that I found this year. ....HH.... 401K

Well here are mine, as humble as they are, compared to the rest of these awesome finds. Down here we just don't seem to have the really old coins like what is found in the east. I have yet to brake into the 1800 club. Been detecting a little over a year and have had some success. First is my oldest coin to date, and my favorite find. These arent found every day, especially in this condition. I feel very fortunate. 1900 O Morgan Dollar.
[attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3]
Next would be my 1941 WLH. Not that old, but in great shape.
[attachimg=4][attachimg=5]
Number three would be my 1938, Radio Orphan Annie Secret De-coder Pin.
You'll shoot your eye out &quot:grin:rink Your Ovaltine
[attachimg=6]
Finally a nice Silver Navajo Braclet.
[attachimg=7]
Thanks for looking and HH to all!

The rarest of all slave tags. One of only 7 or 8 known. I found this in 2005. It was one of western eastern treasures top 10 that year.

2nd is the only Confederate belt buckle I've ever found. Dug this in a CS camp down along the savannah river in south carolina. It was a site CS troops camped at after they evacuated savannah and crossed into SC.

The thrid is a rare 1795 half dime. Dug this last year in the lowcountry north of Beaufort.

4th is my South Carolina hatpin. It was broken in two pieces. I had it expertly repaired by Mr Leonard Short.

So thats my top 4.
