Shoulder Belt Plate

This Saturday I took the belt plate to a appraiser and he took some photos and with his software we were able to come up with a name. It was amazing what his computer could do with the photos. This is what we think it is:


co M Macdonald which is so far off from what I thought the name was


First off I would like to research the name but I need some help. What would be the best avenue to start the process of look this name up?

Also does anybody have any idea as to what the co might be. In the early days did the army abbriveate Colonel with co? I know its a stab in the dark but I have to ask.

Al , traditionally Colonel is abbreviated with Col. but the Co could be an abbreviation for Commander ( Commanding Officer) or Company . try military discharge websites like this one

or even an older or later time frame revolutionary war , French an Indian or just after the war of 1812 .
