my life just lately has been sadly devoid of coppers so when i got the chance to detect a house from 1693 today my hopes where high.
when i arrived at the house the lady that greeted me was over joyed that i was a brit becouse her late husband came from fulham england just down the road from my home town of walthamstow east london.
she took me on a tour of her stunning house that was the origanal house of the first minister of the town timothy stevens and was acturly two houses sort of bolted together the other half the john treats house was joined to it in 1720.
after chatting for ages about england and how much she missed the motherland i didnt get time to do any of the land that you can tell has never been touched , she asked me to have a quick sweep of the basement and omg you should have seen this place , dirt floor , all the old brickwork ,beehive oven built into the old fire place........just heaven thumbsup01 .
on goes my detector and bang.....nice high penny signal reading 2 inches. i wasnt holding my breath of this being anything old being so shallow but low and behold i turn over what can only be described as dust and out pops a copper coin......i tell ya i nearly fell over !!!!.
a clear bust faceing left and britannia on the back in all her glory.
after getting her home i didnt clean it but just dropped it in olive oil and after 10 mins the date was there to see... 1750 !!!!!! and the words georgivs II on the front.
im thinking its a penny but perhapes some one can tell me if im right.
here is some pics.................god im so bloody happy right now.... :uk:usaflag::

Glad to see you got yourself a copper. Hopefully now that you have the chit chatting out of the way you can go and hit the yard, sounds so promising. Waiting patiently for your future finds. :congrats:

Great story and terrific find, Lee! It looks like that old copper was mostly protected from the elements by being in the basement. 260 282 years old! WOW!

I hope you people in New England realize how lucky you are, being surrounded by so much history. Here in the town where I live the oldest surviving home is from 1855.

Best of luck with your future hunts, Lee! thumbsup01

Lee you might be able to get the darker green spots off with a wooden toothpick but the rest of the coin is already a nice ruddy brown color and in good shape . it looks like it may have been dropped fairly new to begin with , congrats again .
