Got out this am with Merc. I had a lead on a spot that we thought would be good, got down to the site and it was loaded with trash. Luckily I sat on the computer last night and found a back-up cellar hole less than a 1/4 mile today. We parked and saw a little trail leading in then saw the colonial cemetery right in front of us. The hole couldnt have been more than a 100-200 from the cemetery. Started swinging and about 15 mins in Merc hits a copper on a path leading away from the hole. I worked near the hole for a little bit then started working between the house and cemetery and got a nice solid hit at about 7 inches out popped the 1817 Matron Head. Worked about another 15 feet over and another nice signal hitting 39 on the Safari at about 8 inches down. Cut the plug and pulled out a square nail, rechecked and target was still there and it was another copper thought it was another Matron Head. We went back to the car and I looked at my coins and I said hey this isnt a Matron Head it's a Fugio. Looked like t would clean up well there was a nice clump of dirt caked on and I could see the rings blow the layer of dirt. If anyone can help ID which type of Fugio it is I would appreciate it. I notice there are like 25 front types and 35 back types. We then left scouted out a few areas and returned to the site. Merc hit another copper near the same area as my two. I hit a small buckle and a couple buttons then near the front of the hole hit another copper stamped DH......Copper is pretty worn though but it rang up a 36 on the Safari which would lead me to believe its a KG. This brings me up to 35.5 coppers on the year now.

Incredible finds, Scott! :wow:

The Fugio still has lots of nice detail left on it! What a great find! :loveit:

Nice Matron Head too! thumbsup01

I always enjoy seeing counter-stamped coins, and that one sure has a bold &quot:grin:H.

Congrats on the terrific hunt! :clapping:

Great hunt Scott.

I can't help on the Fugio but any Fugio is great to me, I'd pass out if I dug one of those.

Really wish I didn't have to miss the hunt this morning :shocked04:verreaction:

Really wish I could find my pinpointer to.....

Your were only about a half hour from us. Looked like you had a good day too with the couple two centers. Hopefully one of these days we can get together for a hunt.

congrats on the fugio Scott , your picture is just a bit to dark if you can show a nice clear lighted close-up of the front and back i could probably give you a variety type . the counterstamed coin looks interesting too , is it just &quot:grin: H thats on it ??

Time to invest in a cheap camera Scott. Beautiful coin you found, but we'll never know with that damn Iphone taking crappy pics lol Five coppers between the two of us yesterday, that was a good day thats for sure. Only the second time I got more that one on a hunt. Oh yea and looks lie you got the oldest coin at that site. :perfect10:

I'll try to take some better pics tonight and post. The other coin only has DH it is worn pretty smooth but rang up in the KG range on my machine.

Thanks

Here are a few additional pictures for ID. looks like there in the Cinqefoils between the words Mind and Your also this does not have the club rays and on the back states is on the left side. In the words we are one these are not written over any other letters.

it looks like it has a lot of detail Scott unfortunately the key areas ( just above the R , where exactly the center ornament is , some of the rays and where the parts of the cinquifoils point to) i need to see are either a little out of focus or the lighting is off . to get the best picture the camera should be exactly over the middle of the coin and a light source should come from one side and cast across the face of the coin so you can see the subtle shadows the detail makes.

Heres yet another pic of the front, I took this under my magnifying glass. Hopefully this gives a little more detail.

Scott thats better i'll take a look and see if that has enough key areas visible to give me a variety to chose from . the area right above the R in your is a little dark still as well as most of the left side of the coin . i'm off to work right now so i won't be able to give it a good once over until around 7am. it look as though it has some amazing detail and has held up really well (something not to common for fugios).

Scott ? Do you own a Loop ? My trick is to put the loop lense against the camera lens and you get instant magnification. It takes some patience and several pics taken, but It always works well for me. Then you can either use an editing program to do what you need to do then open it with the Paint program, set the pixels to 500( the first one anyways)( the second will adjust automatically), then save ( top left). Remember where it was saved to so you can post the right picture.
The loop over the camera lens thing is a great tool. You just have to experiment with it.

Thanks for all your help again. I'll try to look at mine more closely and see if it matches up exactly. I never knew there were so many variations of these coins.

Thanks again

your welcome ,
Scott there are over 60 varieties of fugios and some are pretty hard to tell from another.

You and me both Scott. The Red Book must just show the more common ones. I thought it was deciding if it was Pointed or Club Rays and then whether it said States Unites or United States on the back circle. I guess there must be more to the Cinquefoils and stops. Dan, what other variables ar there besides the Rays and the Back circle? Is there a website with all the varieties or are you using onw of your Books ? I guess you want to get it right when it could mean the difference of possibly thousands of dollars. The coins aren't cheap.
Dan, do you know anyone that has found one of those later made ones from the 1800's with the thinner circles ? What's the story? A brother stole the dies and made his own coins later in the 1800's, is that it?
Is there any variations concerning the Sundial also? Or the numbers in the date ? It's such a complex Coin. It must have to be in really good shape to pos. ID. Mines toast.
Here's mine:
