Got out to the farm this weekend with Steve. Dug 11 colonial buttons including this one. I've seen buttons like this with a I for infantry in the center of the eagle, this one has a D. Found other militia buttons on this farm in the past, can't find any info on this one :thinkingabout:.

hey Mike , Paul is right the D stands for Dragoon and the button looks more around the Civil War era . A backmark will narrow the date better , a lot of people get Dragoon's confused with Cavalry . Cavalry was horse mounted soldiers who exclusively fought from horseback but Dragoons were actually mounted foot soldiers who could arrive fast at a battle , fight as infantry and still be able to maneuver quickley to a new spot on the battle field. its a great button Mike |:cheering: |:cheering:

:omg: That's great! I even see cloth still on the back. I would remove it with tweezers and hang on to it before cleaning the backside. :crossfingers: That there's a maker's mark to narrow it down to a year. I wonder how many makers there were of this button. I know Scovill Co. was a big maker as well as Benedict & Burnham Co. which now is The Waterbury Button Company in CT. and still in business. I have a button made by them from the years 1834 to 1843 . They are huge and also made lanterns. Both makers names should be easy to read as they stamped the back of their buttons with a strong strike but just in case take it slow with just soap and water and a toothbrush, preferably your wife's . rofl

hey Mike can you read a maker's mark on the back , i'm thinking its probably around 1830's to 1840's in age but would like to confirm it.
