I'm quite dopey when it comes to identifying old coins. I'd like to get a good book with lots of photos of old coins so I can tell not just their year, but also when the series was produced, their composition, rareity, etc.

I see lots of coin books for sale, but does anyone have one they would recommend? I could view a good website too, but I've always preferred old-school books.

I just picked up The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins. It has plenty of pictures of coins from Colonial issues of the 1600's right up through current issues. It doesn't show every variation from every coin, but there are tons of pictures. I bought the large print edition, since the pictures are conversely bigger as well as the print. There is also a website at www.whitman.com (http://www.whitman.com), but I believe it requires a paid subscription- may be worth looking into. Good luck.
