I had to send my machine in last year because it started to sound funny over targets. The guy said he needed to shield the coil. It worked fine when I got it back. Does anyone know if after-market coils need to be shielded from time to time? If so, then who would do it? Thanks, Drew

Drew , I believe the transmit windings of the coil shield the recieve coil from emi and R.F. static. I was under the impression when these windings get loose or unravel (from abuse like whacking the coil on things and repeated temprature changes) it affects the shielding integrity of the coil and the recieve coil falses or can act erratic . even wet vegitation like grass leaves can make the coil false . most manufacturers only warrantee their coils for about 2 years after that your usually on your own .

VLF coils are normally shielded with what is known as a Faraday shield. This protects against capacitively coupled noise being induced into the receive coil windings and making funny noises.

Real signals are coupled into the receive coils by electromagnetic fields and the Faraday shield does not affect those.

What probably happened was that there was a defective solder joint, either in the coil, connecting the Faraday shield to the cable shield, or a bad joint at the connector end between the cable shield and the connector pin.

Thank you fellas. So I shouldn't expect to have problems after...say...a 1000 hours on my coils (like having to change tires after 30,000)?

I've had the same problem with my 13 aftermarket coil on the Explorer on a few occasions and I'm thinking this is happening because the coins are tilted and not laying flat .

Yeah, ya know I just went out for an hour and it was fine. Maybe those targets were on side. Thanks |:cheering:
