Question regarding junk

When I detect in fresh water, I find a lot of 'slag' and I never really understood where this stuff is coming from. Can anybody shed any light on that?

I never thought you could actually melt an aluminum can in a regular fire but that makes sense since there was a place for a fire right on the beach. Definitely learned something new.

I must have been living in the dark not knowing this. Makes me realize that there is always something new to learn.
