I had spotted the remains of an old wood stove hiking out of these woods last month. Didn't have time to detect it at the time but marked it in my GPS program (Backwoods Navigator) for future consideration. That was my first site this morning but was a bit disappointed just to find stove parts and a horseshoe. Strange spot for a wood stove. No easy trail to get in there.

I didn't have a lot of time so I swung by a site about 1/2 mile from the stove that I have hit many many times before. Dug a big musket ball, a couple of buttons, this odd flat lead piece. I thought it might have something inscribed on it but there was nothing there when I cleaned it at home. Its about as thick as a copper but a little larger in diameter.

Also found a 5 inch brass spike, and this cool iron thing that is meant to pivot.

It looks to thin for a pot to hang from it. Maybe it was used to hang a coat or something similar ? Any guesses on what it and the flat lead piece might be ??

I'm thinking the lead piece is a homemade gaming piece. I have found a couple of those and most are plain. One of them actually had the back of an Indian Head penny pressed into it, so you could read one cent, hence the gaming piece theory. The other piece looks similar to one I found but mine had a small brass knob on the end. It looked to me like a piece of a kids toy sled, It would be one sled rail. Just some thoughts on it.

The large iron piece reminds me of a fireplace "crane" used for pivoting pots or dutch ovens in and out of the fire, but I'm not sure if it's long enough for that.

It looks broken so it may be long enough

Dan, it's actually the same size as a dollar coin, not quite round though.

I think you nailed it Tony! It's definitely made to swing or pivot.

Could be, maybe an on grade site. One thing that would almost always be there would be a well. I'd expand the hunt just a bit.

That is the neat thing about this hobby even when we don't find "treasure" we find a treasure of knowledge and curiosity!
