Return cellar hunt with Del

Well, this may be our last hunt of the year, so we decided to see if we could find any more Native American points like last Friday's hunt. We went back to the same cellar hole and swamp area. There was about 1 or 2 inches of snow already down and it was pretty cold out. We lasted most of the day until the finger tips said no more:lol: We didn't find any points, but we will try again next year. I did get my first "fattie cent" spill. I was hoping for 2 Flying Eagle cents, but ended up with one 1857 and an 1859 Indian. A good way to start. After a long drought, I got a reading that sounded like iron from one direction and a large cent from the other :confused: It was about 7" deep and as soon as I opened up the hole it was a solid 12-46. But it was not a copper, but just a flat button with a lot of silver plate left on it. I was not happy:lol:More on that flat button later. Found 2 toasted coppers (Bust and Geo II), some other nice buttons and odds and ends.

Oh and that flat button I was complaining about?? Looked for a back mark and found "Waterloo June 1815 and a drum on the back!! I'm not mad at that flat button anymore :shocked04: A great hunt. No one lost any fingers to frostbite:cheesysmile: The only casualty was my Pistol Probe pin pointer. Yep, snapped a second one. No more Pistol Probes for me :shame:

Don't know much about them other than they are most likely to commemorate the victory over Napoleon. I think Dan has a similar one. I don't see them found very often, and they are probably not real rare.

hey great "last of the year " hunt George another 4 coin day for someone at that place :cheering::cheering:. the heavy silver plating on it makes more sense why that button rang out so high . the Waterloo buttons are a commemorative back mark to celebrate the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 , their definitely a British made button that date to about that year or just bit after and are very uncommon to find. you found a very nice one George :smitten:congrats on the relics and indian spill:clapping:

well here are my finds from yesterday ...

most of the buttons were found late in the day and in one particular field , i'll have to start back up there when i return . the two center is an 1865 and looks to be in rough shape which is odd considering where it was found its soaking now (no pictures as of yet cleaned) the large floral button has a WW "superfine extra gilt" backmark and i believe the WW is for William Wallis and an English made button . it cleaned up well but shows some wear on the highest parts of the rose. the small eagle button i'm pretty convinced is an early Jacksonian type .

That button cleaned up great!! But I'm still thinking that 2 cent piece is gonna be decent looking. That chicken eagle buttons just screams very early 1800's to me. Some nice finds. You can have that field...I'm going way to the left of it, behind the swamp next time :lol: If we only had one more week before winter set in :daydream:

All the finds are great but that backmark is the NICEST I've ever seen and it's dated! Back in 1815 the name "Waterloo" had a lot more meaning and context than it does today. A lot of history in that button. Congrats and HH, Dave.
