View Full Version : What Should You Have Found By Now?

Most of us have a list of coins/items that we would like to find...but is there one item you thought for sure you'd have dug by now? I haven't found any 20th century half dollars. Happy holidays all, Drew
PS Anyone who adds an item to this thread is guaranteed to find it this year. :thumbsup01:

No half dollars, no half dimes, and no gold coin. I dig all signals in old house sites as well.

I've been detecting colonial sites for quite a while now and have many "have not found but should have by now" items ,

an iron horse stirrup
a liberty cap large cent
a decorative watch winder (a few plain ones)
a musket ram rod guide
any kind of campaign medal or token
a Spanish 1 or 2 reale coin

Bell-Two

A three cent piece either nickel or silver...and a half cent piece.

It seems that my fellow cellar hole hunters find these all the time, so I thought by now I would have found:

a COMPLETE crotal bell
a silver thimble
MA copper

Judging by one place I hunted being used since 1658, and a colonial home, and two old schools I hit, I would have thought anything before 1900. I'm not picky

the idea came from the older versions of lady liberty like on the old coppers they had a lady figure holding a rod and on top was a cap . A liberty cap sat on the top of this rod (you can just see part of the hat on top of the pole on this coin. they took this same idea and just put liberty's face on the coins and also the symbolic cap on the rod .

RobW
04-16-2014, 04:33 PM

OH....now I get it. I have found 2 of these...and have about 17 in my collection......never knew what the hell that line was before...of course none of mine are in that kind of condition as in that PIC

Well, this was indeed a very interesting thread. As new as I am to detecting, I don't yet have a 'bucket list' of cool finds to find. Instead, I have a 'bucket' of iron finds! But reading what all of you 'pros' have on your wish list, I feel a little redeemed. I've ONLY found 3 old coins. 1 is a 1819 Large Cent Matron Head copper, 1 is a 1903 silver dime, and 1 is a 1905 V-Nickel. I found them very early in my detecting days, like day 1 and day 4 (1819 and 1903 in same hunt, within 15 minutes and 40 yrds of each other in a plowed field near my home). I wasn't looking for coins, was looking for the farmer's lost disc, so was walking briskly and not covering the ground thoroughly, because I figured I would visual the disc before detecting it.

I didn't read the zillion replies to this thread, so here's my opinion on "what you should have found" by now...

You should have a couple of coffee cans full of Zincolns... enough to weigh down your tent in a hurricane.:) Why? If you're skipping Zincolns, you're passing up a lot of good stuff because you're lazy.

You should have at least five hundred nickels too. Why? Because that's where the middle-carat rings are located. If you pass up nickel "hits", you're missing a lot of neat finds. (Just about every class ring in the world "rang up" in the nickel range.)

You should have a reasonable number of Wheaties, and should know exactly where you found them. Why? Where you find Wheaties, there is silver. Go back and get busy.

You should have dug enough aluminum pull-tabs to build a jetliner. Why? Cause that's where the tiny diamond rings (with gold settings) are located.

Finally, the best advice I've ever been given is in regard to low VDI readings on a White's machine. "If it's a solid 8... dig it." Those low, positive readings (below pull-tabs) are almost always high carat-weight gold. It rarely fails. Those readings are often overlooked because they are so close to iron (negative VDI's) that the detectorist ignores them. Don't.:)

I started a little over 7 months ago...mainly hunting two public places that were "built" in the late 1920's early 1930's.

Both have been hit before I got started I'm sure but...
Coins we've found there,,,1848 Seated dime....a couple Merc and Rosie dimes...1 SLQ ...a couple GW quarters...war nickels...buffalo nickels...older Jeffersons...wheaties.
rings galore incl. gold and silver and platinum.
Tokens from a hotel from the '20's
Foriegn coins...modern and older issues
French military medal (don't ask me how it came to be in south Louisiana...lol)

I realize the site's probably don't have the "age" for them to be plentiful but an IH penny is about the only coin that we haven't found there

In the last year or two I've found a seated half dime, seated dimes, seated quarters and a seated half. Have also found close to 50 large cents and more than 20 colonials. Also found 8 pieces of Spanish silver including half, one and two reals. I'd really like to find some bust silver, a half cent and one of those early fat large cents from 93-94. I've found everything around these pieces, just haven't managed to swing the coil over one of these. Of course who wouldn't want to find any US gold coin, myself included.
