We had a pretty good thaw Friday and Saturday. So Sunday I hiked into a site located on a bit of a hillside with a southerly exposure. For those that don't hunt them, many cellar holes are oriented like this. But at this site the trees where thin so I was hoping there was enough snow melt so I would be able to swing the coil. I was happy to find there was only a couple of inches on the ground at the site.

There is a barely noticable cellar hole at the top of this hill. With no stonewalls, I had found this site last fall based more on intuition than anything else. It didn't have anymore easy coppers to give up but I figured I might find a relic or two in the iron.

I was very pleased to sniff out a few buttons, clay pipe stem, spoon bowl, big musket ball, small plated buckle and a nice little straight razor.

I really did feel good to finally get out and dig a few targets  More winter weather on the way mid week.

That looks like a real early site. Is that a 69 cal or a 75 cal musket ball? That knife may be older than you think. Is it all iron? Or does it have some brass on it? Glad you got out. Nice feeling digging again, I bet. :thumbsup01:

Glad to see you got out, we had a bit of a thaw and it felt good too get out for a bit. Nice finds better than mine clad, fake bling and two lonely wheats 1928, 1909 so I was happy with that. It's got to get better soon...it's just gotta....is there an emoticon for "stir crazy" :shocked02:

you dog Jeff , we still have a bit to much snow in these parts . I'm very envious that you got out and found some keepers :envious: I have a knife or razor handle just like that one , mine was from a pretty early site (early to mid 1700's) I thought it may be just a folding knife but i suppose it could be a small straight razor :thinkingabout::thinkingabout:

It had been so long since I had gotten out I would have been happy digging a few square nails

George, it weighed 26.6 grams so I am guessing it is a 65 caliber ?? The shell of the knife is brass. I had just put some Renaissance Wax on it and it hadn't quite dried.

I thought it might be a straight razor Dan rather than a knife because it seemed the neck was too narrow to take much pressure if cutting something. Plus it's shaped similar to a larger straight razor I found last year. But it very well could be a small folding knife.

Great that you could get out and nice finds. We have about a foot of snow still on the ground - the only bare spots we have are where we made paths with the snowblower for the dogs and for us to get around the yard. So looking forward to getting out there.

Man, I'm envious. I'm sure many of us have pondered the same idea, i.e. get out and just swing the coil a bit to relieve the "itch". Problem here is a foot of glacier-hard snow and the ground is frozen 12" + down so I'd need a backhoe to get me started! Great early season finds though and I bet at the end of the year this is one of your hunts you'll remember.

Good hunt and finds there Lodgecent :thumbsup01: I am really getting bad cabin fever here in Michigan, we really got the snow here in Michigan this year and if I did head for any woods around here right now it would require snow shoes, I think I'll wait till it melts some more.
