A couple found some coins on their property in California. Here's the story:

I don't know? I think they may have gone about, at least in part, the right way. They had them graded and slabbed by a reputable firm. I have no doubt they also contacted a lawyer converse in the type of law covering this type of thing!

God bless lucky people, they didn't even have a detector. I had a similar incident happen to me a couple of years ago but my treasure was a bunch of clad dimes........

I have always dreamed of finding a big treasure. Oh how I wish the dreams came true. Only time I have been remotely lucky: I was at Walt Disney World, exiting a show. there was a "wad" of paper crumpled up on the bench leading out the exit hallway. I non-chalantly reached out and grabbed the wad, and it turned out to be several traveler's checks, a $100 dollar bill, several foreign bills and an over eager security guard watching close by. He escorted me to lost and found and "saw to it" that I turned it in. In 6 months, no one claimed it, so Disney gave it to me. (The traveler's checks were insured, so I didn't get them, but I got just under $200).

If this would have happened in any other country, kiss it goodby....Here in America there is still a law called, Finders- Keepers with the right kind of people batting for you....I am sick of reading about people like you and me who make outstanding finds, only to have some dirt bag Archaeologist step in and take it away.

Well, I have been on both sides of that argument. There is a lot of truth to what he is saying. The problem is that what he is saying and what you are saying is actually hurting the hobby. Instead of trying to find common ground, you put the wedge in deeper. DEL and I, along with others, have been working with archaeologists for around 4 years now. You can see the results if you visit the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center 110 Pequot Trail, P.O. Box 3180 Mashantucket, CT 06338-3180. There is a huge divide between the two sides. I have been detecting for over 40 years and have seen the sides grow against each other. Why not set up a meeting with the archaeologist in question, even if it is just a phone call? I don't have a problem with you posting you differences with archaeologist, but using terms like "dirt bag" is derogatory and will not be tolerated. You may not like him, but he is probably very educated and passionate about saving history, and does not deserve to be belittled in any way. PM me if you want further discussions about this.

Pretty much everything "reported" in mainstream media is very subject to bias. I hardly ever believe everything I read or see on "the news".
