New Jersey Copper, chape, misc.

Hit a site yesterday, man was it wet! Nearby stream had overflowed and soaked the site. This site was already tough to hunt because it is so choked. But the wet soil helped me find a few goodies.

Found a toasted New Jersey copper under a big root . My first NJ copper, so I'll happily take it as is.

You can just make out the shield on the reverse and the horse head and plow on the obverse.

Also found a chape, button and musket ball (not shown). I take credit for the musket ball because it was in my pouch. It's like fishing, as long as you get the fish on the boat, it counts. :grin: My pouch tipped over when I was packing my gear to leave the site. I know exactly where to find that ball next time I am there.

Don't know what that brass band is with the ornate hook. There are two more holes that likely had the same hooks. Found another scythe handle thingy. I had also found one last week. It's the round thing with the slot. Found some modern stuff too. This site goes back to the 1700's, but as often the case, someone dumped a load of early 1900's trash into the cellar hole.

New tick suit did its job. Didn't notice I was wearing it after a while. But the temps were only in the 50's.

Hey Jeff , congrats on your first Jersey State copper :cheering::cheering:the brass band is a bit puzzling :dontknow: and those scythe handle brass collars sound too good , their almost as bad as oxknobs in sound:hairpulling: , glad to hear the bug suit is comfortable to wear , its a bit more "piece of mind" to know your protected well from the critters out in them woods. congrats again on the finds Jeff,

That musket ball weighed at least 6 pounds Drew :lol:

It's called "Rynoskin". It was around $26 for both shirt and pants. I got it on-line at Walmart. Make sure you get a "large".

Don that is a brass collar that goes onto a wooden handle maybe on a scythe or other long handled hand tool . some of these handles were called "Nibs" heres a few pictures of where on the tool the item you pointed out was and in relation to the tool.

That's right Dan, I haven't dinged a find in many years. I will carefully pinpoint my target, then I will dig a plug about a foot and a half in diameter..... and that's just for coin-sized objects. And that's why I am only allowed to detect in the woods :lol:

Congrats on the Jersey copper :groovy: We don't get many of them up here at all. Mostly CT or Geo coppers. Every once in a blue moon a Jersey or MA copper pops up. Nice save.

Seriously, very nice hunt! The New Jersey copper is clearly identifiable on both the front and back. And since they only made them for three years you know it's 1786-1788. Very cool piece of early American coinage. I would give my left arm to be able to find one.
