Tuesday I obtained permission to hunt a church site that dates back to 1846. The present church was built in 1881 and the current office building was built in 1861. There was a school on the property from 1886 and had its last class graduate in 1968, the school was torn down in the 1970's. The grounds covers a large area with a couple modern buildings. I only had a few hours to hunt so I decided to move around to the different areas and get a sample of what was in the ground. I started hunting an area that once had a ball diamond on it and found some modern coins and a few wheats. I got a jumpy 12-30/37 at 7" that ended up being a costume ring with a red stone. My first silver was a small ring stamped sterling. I also found a nice military button, 20 wheats and $$2.05 in clad. The heart stopper of the day was a 1916-S Merc. Which was the only silver coin.
Wednesday I only had 2 hours to hunt so I headed to my famous grove and was not disappointed as usual. I dug another silver quarter 1964, a religious medal and 5 more wheats.

Very cool ! Everyone would love to find that iconic 1916 D merc! In my first year of detecting I found three 1916 mercs in a short period of detecting at a buddy's house....all plain dates of course. I bet that gave you a rush until you saw the "s".

I'll bet the old heart skipped a beat on the "s" mintmark. Coins in nice shape. Great Finds. My old church basement did not work out but I am still hoping to hit the grass outside sometime this summer. Wisconsin Digger

I think the back is iron, it's all rusted away

I think the back is iron, it's all rusted away Not sure if the military version has any iron backs, but someone should know. I was hoping it was a brass back .
