First door I knocked on today. 6 of the quarters were in a spill next to a big old stump. The Franklin rang up as 01-49 at 2 inches deep. The Walker rang up as 01-50 at 6 inches deep. I won't even mention all the wheat pennies. Can anyone ID the copper for me? HH, Dave.

After checking internet images, my guess is George III penny. But man, what a GREAT hunt!

Thanks for the ID. Can you see the date in my picture or is that the only years they made that coin?

Actually, it is probably 1806, I believe 1806 and 1807 were the only years, so what I thought might be a 5 or 6 at the end must be a 6.

Added the date side photo of one of mine so you can see what the date should look like.

Thanks Tony! I can't wait to MD the other half of that yard. It's quite large at about one acre (1/2 up front, 1/2 in the back). I'm surprised I didn't get any Indians or mercs though. The yard was tough to work though with TONS of iron signals and falsing every few inches. I might have missed the deeper fainter signals. My auto sensitivity hung around 20 the whole time.

Florissant right over the border. I plan on being there over the 4th of July holiday for a few days. That was a nice hunt by the way. :shocked04:

Thanks Del, I definitely got lucky! I'm curious about the 1806 copper though. Since we were minting our own coins by 1806 why would we still be using British coins?

Dave , we were using foreign currency of all kinds up until 1857 when the government made it illegal to do so. It really didn't matter who was on it as lond as it was good copper or silver it was accepted .

:shocked01: I have not seen that much silver in one hunt in ...... forever  When you are through with the second half of that yard, return to the first half and dig any non ferrous target.... You may be pleasantly surprised at what still lurks there. Fantastic hunt Dave! :beerbuddy:
