Have you ever dug a very worn silver coin that looked better when you dug it than after you cleaned it, if it's like my seated quarter it really doesn't have much numismatic value so adding a little tarnish will enhance the features of the coin. Boil an egg and peel it very carefully when still hot, put it in a ziplock bag, then with the coin you want tarnished wrapped a couple times in a paper towel put it in with the hot peeled egg and mush them together, close up the bag and an hour and a half or two later open it up and unwrap the coin which will be tarnished and rub it between your fingers until you get the desired look that you want.

Looks much better toned than polished clean. The contrast comes out when the toning is added. You can see the coin way better and it looks more like an old coin should look. Nice job.

That's cool. I like the tarnished look better too. Thanks for sharing this technique.
One question though. Do you eat the egg afterwards? :envious:

It's a basic method that some ring makers use on their rings after they have polished them and want a a toning effect on rings etc. after they're finished making their product.

Only works on silver?

I've only tried it on silver so far but I'm sure that it would work on other metals that tarnish, like copper but if there are any small pits on the copper it might not look that great.

:hystericallaugh: "Ineggspensive" cracked me up!

Great job! Is this a no-no for a coin you're going to get slabbed and graded... :dontknow: I have one I'm going to send off soon... maybe it would help keep it from being labeled "environmental damage"?

Thanks for this tip. I've saved several "cleaning" tips on my computer, but this is my first tarnishing tip.
Should come in handy!
