Went back to my in-laws for the first time with my 350 and man was I excited :shocked05: I found my first large cent 1830 Matron 4105141052I completely flipped out couldn't believe it I think I was hyper ventilating :hystericallaugh: I know I was in complete shock after I found the large cent I found a couple of early wheat cents and then it happened again found another large cent 1847 Braided Hair Liberty4105341054
I was completely cool on the second one not :grin: I had a great evening hunt so much fun 41055 thanks and Hh
P.S. any advise on cleaning them up

Congrats on your first large cent(s). Obviously the 1847 was the braided hair, but the first one is the matron, as Drew said. The matron does look like 1830 to me as well.

Awesome double man! The braided hair LC looks like it still has some decent detail on it. Should clean up nicely.

Not sure which is the best process. Someone can probably tell you which is best. You can use lemon juice or vinegar as they are weak acids. Olive oil will take months to do, but it will clean the crud from the coin like caked on dirt. I have tried using hot peroxide. It works ok, just seems to work differently on different coins. My 1914 wheat had so much crud, it did nothing cuz there was no exposed metal yet it took a good amount off my toasted coin. And a regular wheat I tried and it just cleaned it slightly.

Ahhhhh.....the excitement of finding your first large cent. You must be thrilled. I remember the first time I found one. Lately they seem be jumping out of the ground at me as I found 15 so far this year and two last week. Once you finish detecting the inlaws you have to see if you can detect the neighbors too. Seems like an old and active area.

NP. This is a forum about answering questions... :lol: Maybe first clean it with an old toothbrush to get dirt off. If you see some pitting under magnification, there should be dirt in the pits. Maybe a quick bath of one of the acids or peroxide, and then use the olive oil for a while to get the crud out of any pits. The crud will protect the pits from further material removal with first cleaning.
