1794 Liberty Cap 1793 Head

I haven't posted on here in awhile but I wanted to share this find with everyone,did some hunting with my friend Gary yesterday,we detected this cellar hole that was way off the beaten path not even on the maps,the only reason we found it because we got all turned around in the woods,We pulled 6 coppers in an hour yesterday and to my surprise this 1794 Liberty Cap with a 1793 Head.Im afraid to clean it so im just going to send it out to N.G.C.

Wow!! That is an excellent find! I wouldn't clean it either; grading companies are sticklers on that sort of thing (it looks like quite a bit of detail is obscured by the dirt though, as I notice that the rims still have some definition). I'm curious on what N.G.C. has to say on it!

:shocked05: great early copper Gary ,it looks as though it has quite a bit of detail under the dirt . unfortunately a grading company will only label it as "authentic " but "environmental damaged" doubtful they will clean it.

Gary it it were mine ...

I would first soak it in some warm distilled water for at least 20 minutes or more.
then i would place it under a heat lamp to see if any of the dirt would peel up on its own and repeat this process if necessary. I would only use (very delicately) a wooden tooth pick on the stubborn areas leaving only the smooth appealing patina .
then once i was happy with the results soak it one more time and then pat dry good and give it a nice coat of renaissance wax.

Again Gary this is what I would do if it were mine . you do as you wish or what you feel confident in doing .

that would be Mayadigger of Noble Roman Coins, he is a professional coin restorer/cleaner . Gary it wouldn't be a bad idea to give him a call so he can see the coin .

Love seeing the 1794 Large Cents being found, congrats. Anytime someone says a Head of 93, I start looking, since I have a S-19a I found years ago and found back than that attributing 1794 Large Cents can be quite a challenge due to the so many, many varieties. I spent some time this morning trying to attribute yours and just not enough details showing for me to do so, however, I can safely say it is not the Head of a 93. I wish I could have seen more detail on the Reverse and probably could have got the variety.

I tried to ID the coin by one feature but came up empty handed. I only have Breen's book, which is outdated. I used the bottom opening of the Liberty cap which struck me as odd. It seems the opening to the cap does not have any folds or bends to it, like all the other ones do. It seems like a smooth oval opening. Not sure if you get what I mean but the opening at the base of the cap is almost like an oval racetrack would be....at least the first half that is visible is. All the other varieties I looked at showed some bends in that left half of the opening. I thought it would be easy to ID it by that opening but it was not :lol: Super coin by the way :shocked04: Love to know what NGC lists it as.

Gaah... I was replying to the other thread when I lost the window. Anyway. As George was saying I believe you have a Sheldon 36 version. I did find pictured of what George was saying with the wavy cap and a version with the straighter cap. In your cleaned up version it seems the top half of the cap opening still has a little wave to it.
