I don't usually hunt much in the summer because I can't take the heat and the ground here usually turns into concrete. But...the wife had to get out and try her Cutlass as it is fresh from the Tesoro factory with a new coil. She spotted a park from the commuter train recently that had a baseball diamond being resurfaced so we headed over to the park early yesterday morning to check it out. Turns out they were not removing the sod from the field but adding dirt on top of it. So, we swung around the other areas for a couple of hours before the temps got into the mid-90's. Somebody must already hunt there because the pickings were slim. Found only a couple of dollars in clad:

That evening the wife convinced me again to brave the heat and go into our usual woods. We found 6 wheaties and right in the middle of an open area that I have gone over many times, I got a signal that bounced around from the 80's to the negative range. I played around with the trigger to get the DC readout and it also bounced around from the silver to iron range. I had a hunch and was right. I dug it and out popped a beautiful Merc. It looks like it was dropped while brand new. I tested the hole afterward and got a strong iron reading. It was partially masking the dime. That was one of those eureka moments with my detector.

Also found a little folded up piece of metal. It looked like it might be something so when I got home, I washed it off and carefully unfolded it.

This is a pic I found on the web showing what it came from:

Since you suvived the heat I can say, nice group of wheats and of course the Merc  They put in some new dirt over the grass?? Hmmmm... wonder where they got the dirt? Maybe something old in it :thinkingabout: Don't know much about Tesoros, but I used to drive a Cutlass lol If it's anythin like my '71 was, it will be a good machine ;)

Yeah, I need to start using it again. I have been using the XLT almost exclusively since I bought it last fall but just don't get the non-coin goodies as much as I did with the Tesoro. I may want to pick your brain on the GSII's notch settings. Never quite figured out how to best use it.

My brain ? :shocked04: Uh oh , were in trouble !! Been awhile since I had my Golden Sabre 2 so I'm going to refer you to The Official Tesoro Website ( where you can download a manual) at WWW.tesoro.com/ (http://WWW.tesoro.com/) once you've gotten there , there will be a gray column on the left... click manuals...click earlier models ...click Golden Sabre 2 then scroll to selecting the proper mode of operation .
What I would do was find out what variety of pop top or pull tab dominated the site and notch it out .Best to not use notch at all but some places are just wall to wall pulltabs .
 take that Golden out and get some gold !! The stock 8 round Donut coil that came with it is a great all around coil . thumbsup01

I sure know what you mean about detecting in the heat, Bill. It can be draining. You managed some nice goodies though. thumbsup01
