Yep, I guess it is silver as I just bench tested it and it rang up 79, the merc bench tested at 81. The buckle was a 77 in the ground.

Drew it looks like its a native American Fur trade ring brooch , they were usually made of thin silver.

If you do a search on google for fur trade ring brooch pictures you'll see many variations

Thanks Dan :notworthy:
The word "Annular Brooch" keeps coming up. I guess it means it is a complete circle. Thanks again for the ID!

Did you nick the merc? When I pulled up that link Dan posted, I had thought it was the same pic.. until I went back to your pic and saw it was different. doh! Nice find. Is it just me or is there something on the ring next to where the tongue pivots? I thought anniversary from title meant that it was like last year... where there was a group hunt. It's supposed to be a mild day today but idk if I will get any time to hunt... had to be at work after long weekend. :girlcry:

Thank you everybody! I really appreciate the kind words....and yes Mrs OxShoe is special!
Jim, I too was weirded out by those indentations but it turns out they were part of the design. There are four of them equidistant to the tongue...BUT it was done by hand so they are off a bit, or a lot

It was fashionable to use these brooches as neck clasps in medieval times. This is something I read on Britain History

Hello all, I'm new to the group. Thought I'd share a fur trade era brooch that was recently ID'd for me. I wasn't familiar with them before.45838

Hello Rocker , Welcome to the forum . your item looks very old , is it iron or brass?? its a very cool and interesting piece and I'm sure looks great in a display.

Thank you for the 'welcome'. It is made of brass but, may have been silvered. It was dug in a very small area with other period pieces. The British 1/2 penny is 1739 not 1730. No date on the Irish 1/2 penny other it does bear the bust of George II as well.45843

Idk. I had this as well on two different browsers yielding the same result. No picture for me either. There is a link but when clicked it says:'Invalid Attachment specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator (http://www.americandetectorist.com/forum/sendmessage.php)'
