I struggled deciding whether to title this " The breastplate that never was",,, or "What a fool believes"

I went out for a short hunt after work this afternoon. My goal really was to work through some language barrier issues between my detector and my brain. I think maybe my brain is catching up a little bit, as I didn't dig any PBR cans today. I did however stumble upon this kind of heavy, brass disk. With a little brushing I saw it had two letters and a clear defined rim around it. I won't lie,, my heart got to pumping with the thought that it might be my first breastplate. This would not have been a far stretch as I found a SC state seal button 200 feet away last year. Unfortunately it was getting dark and I was unable to clearly make out what it said in the field.

So I get home and start researching,,,, DB?? Nothing Civil War with those letters. What in the world. Measured it at 2.25 inches ( 57mm ) and that seems to be in the zone. This has to be a breastplate of some sort. A quick check of military schools,, nothing. I'm running all kinds of possibilities in my head,,,, Dick Butkus??,,, dingle berries??,,, and then it hits me,,,,,,,,,,,, "What a fool believes"

What's left of the back is rust flake. The front is a thin piece of formed brass and the back was filled with another material ( rusted )

One of the things I really like about this hobby is the history you pick up. For example, I never knew anything about breastplates. Never had a reason to research them. But I just picked up a basic introduction to them while trying to match up this DB thingee. When/if I actually find a breastplate, I'll be a little more prepared to ID it.

it almost looks like a late 1800's to early 1900's stamped brass alloy horse rosette , i have a few with a rusted back with the monogrammed letters.

Actually, it's a radiator badge off of an old Dodge Brothers car or truck.

I suspect that the Doobie Brothers logo was heavily influenced by the Dodge Brothers hub caps.

Once again our experts have solved yet another mystery. I can agree with you about the history learning aspect of this hobby and that is something that I have come to love about this hobby.
