Civil war era scabbard off of an bayonet from an enfield rifle!!! and more!

had an awesome weekend in Central Virginia . Not much time but still pulled some sweet goodies. Went to a house behind my step grampas house Saturday

well unfortunately it was trashed in the 70s and didn't find much for the hour I was there. Got a hemweight and a piece of lead that was 8" ontop of a huge piece of iron. Wasn't detected before but is trashed. I'll definetely go back though and try again.

Sunday (today) i went to a site that I thought would be completely a dud. It was a vacant house that was where my step grandfather grew up in that's now run down and trashed... there was a older house before the new house that sits now but it burned down. it's vacant and I can detect anytime I want AND it's walking distance!!!!! I got there and started getting what I expected. Lots and lots of surface trash. Finally got a fainter signal in between the surface trash. Finally got down to it in between the trash. It was a weird crude old piece of copper. I reswept over the hole like always and got another, higher signal. I dug down a shocking 9" to find an awesome flat button. Now we're talking. After a while with not many finds other than clad and a crusty wheatie and harmonica reed I get another faint signal... ANOTHER old button! This time with a SICK gold guilted flower design! Oh yeah! As soon as finds started to deteriorate and the surface trash got unbearable I moved onto a different area of the yard (sideyard) and dug some more signals... first out came a vintage mail box lock, then a pocket watch piece, and another wheatie. Lots of trash in this area too. I'll just have to tough it out. I went back in the area where I dug those buttons from and got a few more signals. An old iron buckle, old lipstick tube and Suspender buckle. All faint signals and I get another one and about 4" down I find a small piece of decorative brass... hmm that's a nice piece of brass. As usual I recheck my hole and get another signal. I dug down another few inches and there she was... a piece of brass. Oh wait!!! That looks familiar... looks like "it" could be something... then I realized what it could be , but still wasn't positive so I didn't get too excited. I then dug an awesome silver plated VERY OLD dog tag as my last signal . Too bad it doesn't have writing but it has stuff scratched into it; old scratches. Upon cleaning, I was hopeful that "it" could've been a sword scabbard. I look to my uncle who was a fellow detectorist back in the 80s and knew a great deal about civil war relics. We were in prime civil war country so we were hopeful. When he saw it he immediately noted what it was... my suspicions were right... it was a scabbard but it was a scabbard off of a bayonet from an enfield rifle most likely CIVIL WAR ERA!!! It still has the leather intact inside it!!! :cool: My best civil war relic ever I'm so happy!!! Weaving through trashy sites slow and low pays off guys!! Don't get discouraged by trashy sites!!! HH guys!!!

Thanks Dan! It's really fun to explore old house sites, to pretend the house is still standing and where the yard laid is interesting to me... see you in a couple weeks hopefully :cool:
