Couple hours in the button field - 1/1/15

Once I got all my chores done, I had a couple hours to play this afternoon. Threw my stuff in the car and headed back to last weekend's field for a 2'nd shot.

I did a bit more exploring on the "quiet" side of the field, but didn't waste much time as it was still pretty much quiet. So wandered back to the better side of the field, and get a few finds. Managed another button, and a 1929 wheatie as I was walking back to the car. Not a lot of +VDI targets in this field, but in between I managed to get a pocket knife, copper scrap, .22 rimfire casing, piece of a slug (I think), machine tag, and my whatisit? piece.

Ground froze up quick in 5 days. A few inches to cut through now. Think I'm going to try again Saturday before the storm rolls in.

And my whatisit? piece. About the diameter of a nickel, thin, convex and slightly curved, not magnetic, and hits 21 VDI on my White's. The back is plain, but the face has enough to make me ask if it's something other than a washer maybe.

Glad that you got out. The last picture just might be Chinese coin...:dontknow:. The ground was pretty hard today but manageable and hope that you can get out this Saturday.

Brian, My only cash coin is a bit larger than a quarter...and flat. Lamp turners are much smaller. I'd guess it is a saddle decoration.

Thanks Drew. I was going to say my only other guess would be a small rosette behind leather tassels, maybe on a bridle. You beat me to it.

Or a counterfeit Chinese nickel. :lol:

Nice getting out this time of year and my first impression is a Chinese coin as well.

Squeaked in a couple more hours today before the flakes started falling. My last hunt there too since the ground is getting too frozen. Unless I find some woods, this may be it for me.

Keepers were a heel plate (my 1'st). It was folded up pretty good, so I thought it was a piece of scrap at first glance.
And the other keeper came home in a frozen clump. Hitting 51 on the V3i, and small, I knew it was a button. So chopped the clump out of the plug and tossed it near the car. :lol:
Once thawed out at home, I was looking at an LH & Scovill button (Waterbury, CT), sans shank. Leavenworth and Hayden were in partnership with Scovill from 1811 to 1827. It was in good enough shape to give the back a light hit with a brass brush & some water to clean up the lettering.

Hey it must feel good to just get out , congrats on the buttons coin and heel plate Brian. the small round item with the square hole is a backing plate , either to a cabinet knob or half of a drawer pull.
