Got in a full morning of swing time with the Deus today. Hit a site that I wouldn’t call “pounded” but I have hit it pretty hard in the past. But I knew there was a decent chance it could produce some coppers if I worked at it hard enough. I really wanted to focus on learning the audio of the Deus so I took the controller off the unit and stuck it in the arm band holder and tried not to peek at it. That’s one of the benefits of being completely wireless. It’s like having a coil on the end of a stick ! I spent a lot of time fussing over signals but it really helped me understand what I was hearing.

Anyway I managed to snag an 1829 Matron Head and a toasted CT copper. The Matron Head was a surprise as I know I have passed several different coils over that spot. I had found another copper about 5 feet from that spot last year. There wasn’t any iron in the way either. It was very shallow at about 3 inches and the Deus gave a double signal. Not sure why I had missed it in the past??? :thinkingabout:

I almost passed on digging the Connecticut copper. Just prior to finding it I dug a piece of flashing that came in with a VDI of 60. About 4 feet away from the flashing I hit the CT copper. It sounded just like the flashing and also had a VDI around 60. I was sure it was another piece of flashing. Glad I decided not to be lazy.

That large lamp part was very deep under a bunch of roots and sounded like silver. Probably took me 20 minutes to dig it out.

The Deus continues to impress me. In many ways it is a lot simpler to understand how the various settings interact compared to my DFX and it is very easy to create and change programs. One negative for me is it doesn’t feel as balanced as I would like. The Deus is extremely light though, so it really isn't a big deal.

The remains of what looks like a CT copper.

Stay safe!

That LG is a great find for the new year!! I'm glad the new machine is working out for you.
I can't wait for the thaw here in Illinois so we can get out too. Until then I'll sit back and enjoy your posts. :congrats:

Wonderful finds to start out the new season, and I am interested in hearing how you get along with the Deus.

Great to see you're learning your brand new toy Jeff! Man, wish I had some unthawed soil to dig...no way up here in northern New England right now. Saw you were wondering how you missed the LC from earlier hunts. You'd be surprised how many small areas we as detectors miss around a site, even after multiple hunts. It's all about probabilities and statistics, and why we say a site is never truly hunted out. I work as a meteorologist for the federal govt (yeah...go ahead and shoot me your jokes...I've got a tough skin!) and thought I'd share a quick image and analogy with you. Image is of historical hurricane tracks in the North Atlantic since 1850. Now, before looking at the map one would think every spot in the tropical North Atlantic would have taken at least one direct hit by a hurricane since the mid-1800s...but as the map shows...alas no. There are still a few spots that the path of a hurricane has not gone directly over. This sort of illustrates what a metal detecting map would look like if it showed all of your swipes on your hunts at a site. Sorry for the long-windedness...and best of luck in 2015. 45650

WTG on snagging the LC as well as the CT! There have been a few places I've walked over targets and then gone back and got a good hit. It happens but at least it gives you an idea that the goodies are still there.

Woo hoo! Congrats on the winter coppers! :cheering:

It seems that you are getting the hang of that Deus rather quickly! :thumbsup01:

We are suffering through a frozen, white tundra here in Illinois right now. I'm glad you are able to detect!

:congrats:

You guys are killing me!!! Very excited for you!
We have a few inches of snow on the ground, coupled with the fact that it was 2 degrees when I woke up yesterday didn't allow me to contemplate hunting.
I bet that coil feels front heavy because there is no counterweight. Seems like the coil is the only part of that machine....correct? Seems like it is working well for you. 11 inch coil?

Thanks everyone.

John, that map was great analogy. Even if you are gridding a site there will always be gaps in the coverage. I actually use Back Country Navigator on my smart phone to track my wanderings. Some sites do end up looking like your hurricane map  If you get desperate for a hunt come on down. Out in the woods, I only have an inch of frozen ground to punch through.

It really doesn't seem heavy Drew. Just a bit unbalanced....to me anyway. But you are right, there is no counterweight to speak of. The controller is the size of a smart phone, you can attach it to the rod if you want to reference the screen while you hunt or you can wear it on an armband, stick it in a pocket or even leave it home because you can actually detect with just the headphones. The headphones don't have all the functionality of the controller but you can adjust the major settings. Pretty amazing. I have the 9 inch coil. Better for cellar hole hunting in my opinion. That's the other negative with the Deus. The coils are expensive compared to other brands. But the price of the Deus just came down by a LOT! Hopefully the coils will too at some point. Mrs. Lodge Scent made the Deus purchase just days before Deus lowered the price but the great folks at Detector Electronics in Southborough took care of me. Actually I think they are the sole US distributer for Deus. There are lots of other Deus dealers of course.

If I'm ever down your way I may do that. Just hunkered down up here right now. -8F here this morning, car battery didn't like it at all!

Congrats on your LC and CT. When I go back to a site that I have hit and I manage a good find, all I can do is shake my head saying
"now how the heck did I miss this". You're using a different machine while I am using the same one.

Very nice way to start 2015...:thumbsup02:
