Al, there is just some gilt missing that makes it look like a "G". It's actually a "C" cavilry button for the Union. Check

I woulda thought too unless I saw another somewhere before. Check the back to see, maybe it's Scoville from Waterbury CT.

That is an awesome button! Very nice that it still has some gilt left on it. They don't turn up very often here in Illinois either. It looks like it might clean up better with del's CLR method.

Great button, and yes, some additional careful cleaning should bring out more of the gilt. Way to go.

I am using ultrasonic cleaning with only distilled water. The gild is coming out slowly. It already looks twice as good as the picture.

As I clean it up I noticed it still has the ring on the back. It was bent down. Does that make it more valuable if it still has the ring on the back? The gild is coming out

not just hard to find but extremely challenging to get one in February , I would of thought all of Indiana ground was hard as a rock this time of year ! well done :clapping:
