View Full Version : Ground is frozen over, so it's time to hunt inside!

On Sunday it was in the 50s, which is great weather for PA in February. But the ground was still frozen solid so I couldn't dig outside. But then I remebered under the sanctuary of my church from the late 1800s is a dirt basement. It's tough to get to though and the ceiling clearance at the most is 3 feet high! To get under it I had to go inside and down to the basement and then climb up 8 feet of bedrock (ladder came in handy) and then army crawl around with my detector and equipment. The cobwebs were nightmarish and since there's no utilities or electric lines I don't think anybody has been under it for a long time. The first thing I noticed were all the square nails. They just littered the place, the iron audio on my at-pro sounded the most erotic I've ever heard. So I gave up with the detector and started to eyeball with the light from my headlamp. I found a really old shirt first, and then a horseshoe. My favorite find was the hobbailed leather shoe that is probably late 1800s. I also found a bone which I think (and hope is animal) a beat up baseball and a few other odds and ends. Nothing spectacular and no coins but it was a neat experience and partially satisfied the detecting bug. HH!

That would be a great place to hunt, even w/o a detector. I will have to consider similar places now. Thanks for the great idea.

There might have been a few things dropped from when the place was built but not many people have been down there throughout the years. Still I commend the tenacity tho. The ox shoe I'm sure meant the place was built onto an old field. I'd guess maybe a dog ran under there to hide his bone. Apparently all those nails can be in the ground before the house falls down, comparative to cellar holes with the structure missing but thinking nails hit the ground from the destruction of the structure.
