View Full Version : A short after school hunt cures the winter blues!

Yesterday I was able to get a short hunt in after school! The snow was mostly melted off where the sun hit but the ground was still hard as a rock. However, the ground was still frozen stiff but I was able to chip away at it. I went back to my large cent field and got a slick copper, and that was about it. But a copper's a copper so I was happy!
HH!

After a long hard winter that's a great start if you ask me!!
I might go a whole season and not find a LC! Slick or not!
Nice find.
Congrats! :)

What type of copper is it? I can see a little detail remains but I can't guess from what I see. At least you got out. It's coming soon to NE where we can get out.

It looks to be a jersey copper, I'll post a picture. Hope the snow melts off for you!

I think you may be on to something there. In the first photo of your coin above it appears that you can see part of the plow, and the braided line that is below the horses head. (Opposite side of the shield.)

Looks like there were a lot of different varieties of the NJ. Throughout 1876-88 there were a few variations on the plow shape and horse head shape. I def see the shield tho from new pics. The first pic I didn't recognize anything like it, tho.

Yeah, the obverse is pretty much obliterated. I've seen variations of the shield too, mine looks like the narrow slightly off center one.
