Yesterday after dinner went out again and found this beauty.
A small silver hammie.

Love the hobbie.

Nice silver. Hmm... It makes me wonder tho. How deep was it? To let the others on here make a determination how deep a silver dropped 200-300 years ago should be versus how deep your 700 year old coin was.

It probably was in a plowed field which means it has been turned over and under for the past few centuries.

Great find by the way :loveit:

I knew that was plausible but it was not specified. Obvi if it was from a plowed field, Willems could have been the one to answer, or if the off chance it was not in a field, then it could have provided some relevance. lol. I know I usually put forth that I view all aspects of a situation and this time it didnt seem as such, but I did...just left it open.

Great hammered silver Willems! From what I could find online, looks like your coin may be among the more uncommon from the John 3 Duke of Brabant period (1312-1355), but you may like to dig a bit deeper (pardon the pun). John the 3rd of Brabant's era was a time of prosperity though. Is the 1317 date shown on the third picture down, at bottom, upside down? Hard to tell with those old block letters...almost like ancient graffiti! Here's a reference online showing similar coins of your type if interested.

A beautiful hammered coin. I get excited with a coin from the 1700's and really excited with one from the 1600's. Don't know if I could handle the emotional impact of a 1300's coin......
