Found this over the weekend and con't seem to locate anything on it.

The writing I can get off it reads across the top band "S&GM CO."
On the right side ribbon reads the date 1871

The bottom bit of the curved slot broke off and went missing during cleaning

It's part of a suspender buckle or clip. The two small tabs with holes in them have been flattened out, but they would have originally been bent at 90 degrees and had a roller between them that the suspender strap wrapped around.

Pretty cool find!

Yes, it is a suspender clip and even someone had found one before. It was made by the Smith & Grigg manufacturin company originating from Waterbury, CT.
