Hi all,
I was in PA last year and decided to detect around our old hunting cabin. The land has been in our family since the early 1800's. My dad explained to me that his dad described in the old days how the hunters would sleep in tents up on this raised flat area where today pine trees now grow tall. I remembered that story and when I had a detector with me poked around a bit and within 10 minutes I found this 1831 Liberty Head large cent. At the time I didn't have a clue what it was because of the poor condition. It was under a thick bed of pine needles laying there on top of the very hard soil. Some of my family and I deduced it was burned. Maybe lost and a fire later melted the back side completely. The lighting in this picture just makes matters worse and doesn't allow for much to be seen. We needed a magnifying glass, proper lighting, and a little moisture to make out the 1831 date and the liberty head with stars. I've included a front and back photo example of a different 1831 large cent from the internet. :thinkingabout: Oh well. Still, what a thrill it was for me to find my oldest coin to date.
