I found this in the yard where I found the barber and seated dimes and the two IH cents last month. I know virtually nothing about buttons, other than in general they're a good way to connect two pieces of clothing. This does look like an Army button to me, and the rest of the items I found there might place this around WWI? Any help appreciated. (The back is gone.)

That is a "Great Seal" button which was used on military uniforms starting in 1902, so your button could indeed be from the WWI era.

Yup. Most likely a WWI button.

Thanks, Tony. I thought it looked like what I remember from my old Army class-A uniform in the 70's. Have they changed at all?

The "Great Seal" button was introduced in 1902. In 1910 a rim was added. Can you tell if there are any traces of black paint on your button? If there are traces of black that would date the button from 1910-1923. If it doesn't have the black finish then it would date from 1910-1917 and 1923 to present day. Since the back is missing it will be hard to narrow it down much more.

Your information is much appreciated. :thumbsup01:
