Dug quite a few targets today, but by far the best was this button. I took a walk away from the site down near the river and it was the only thing I found!

And my day just got a little bit better. I dug a pewter which took me several tries to decipher, and finally I got it... Rev War 3rd American - New York Volunteers.

That is sort of what my brain did. :) It's funny the last two finds that gave me a great adrenaline rush I did not discover what I had until I got home.... so I didn't have to deal with the scrambled brain lack of concentration for the next 10 minutes syndrome, like I did with this one. Obviously everything in this hobby is a surprise to some degree, but that one was way off the radar for both thinking it could be a decent possibility, as well as the circumstances of the moment... because it sure seemed like I was in a dead zone of the field, and for the most part I was. I was in this same field briefly over a decade ago, we checked it fast, didn't get much and left... so glad both the button and its great condition waited for me.

That's a nice find. I wonder why, tho, it looks like it is two piece from the back. Obvi I found other pics online, and those are more evident. Saw something about the 76th being called MacDonald's Highlanders Started in 1777, but landed in NY in 1779.

It's the plating wrapping around the edge of the button that makes it look like a two piece.

Yes MacDonald's Highlanders and they basically just fought in the war and then disbanded.
