Today I dug 2 musket balls and my first colonial shoe buckle! A little broken but you can still compare the two easily!

A bit more like this! Kind of a mix. But you have to remember buckles from the 1700s won't all be made the exact same! I'm excited

they lump these "Georgian" buckles from 1720
to about 1800 but their date can be more narrowed down by the subtle types of designs , many factors go into trying to date them correctly. (frame size and thickness , tongue and chape styles , ornate motifs ) I've also seen on many occasions repairs done to these buckles (mix matching chapes and or tongues ) .

Interesting! Is there anyway we can date this one? I can't seem to make out any designs. Pretty eroded. They tongue is interesting on it too. I haven't seen one like that. I've only seen ones that looks like a fork with 2 prongs or a "Y" where this one is two separate parts. Hm

Assuming you have normal or average sized hands Owen  the buckle looks a bit on the smaller side and with its very thin frame , type of tongue it would be safe to say it was made somewhere in the 1740's to 1750's .before the era when the buckle frames got much larger and very ornate . these tongues with the longer separate tines are not rare but not very common either and out of the 60 or 70 complete shoe buckles i have recovered i maybe only have a couple or a few of these types. so they are interesting to see.

Drew ,I'd probably have close to a 100 by now but i've given and or donated some away over the years . Buckles tend to be very very small from the 1600's and also into the very early 1700's and through the decades and as fashion changes they get larger , thicker frames more ornate . is it possible its a child's buckle sure but because buckles in that age bracket i mentioned are not that big to begin with i doubt it very much it is one .

1740s-1750s amazing! Thank you for the great info! I'm sure you know all about these considering how many you've found. It's really quite fascinating especially since i found it right behind my house! Definitely gonna have to swing around the area a ton. There has to be more treasures around! Thanks for the help Dan
