Another insane weekend but managed to go to the cellar hole down the street from me for a couple hours Sunday morning just to get out for a while. My plan was to experiment with some settings to see if I could sniff any more deep goodies from the iron belt right around the cellar hole. Dug a lot of iron is what I did. All those deep iffy signals turned out to be square nails.

On the trail back out I dug this small shoe buckle. I almost passed on it. I was so shallow I would have bet money it was a flattened can or some other junk. It was just below the duff. Really no more than an inch or so down. Both chape and tongue swing freely on the pin.

No idea what that small iron wedge thing is to the right below. The blade is thick and has a slight curve to it. And what would be the purpose of that rectangular hole ??

Funny how sometimes the best stuff is on top and the trash ends up deep. Couldn't tell you how often I find old coins near the surface but chase beer cans or screw caps down to 12 inches!

As for the "wedge, it's actually an Adze:congrats:. Really nice find!

I agree it looks like an adz , I have found many (a cache of them for the museum ) and one or two for myself , a cool colonial tool .

I was thinking adze as well but that little hole in the blade doesn't seem like it would support a haft strong enough for that kind of work. I wonder :thinkingabout:
