As promised, here are the pics of the 1852 LC I found Wednesday. A brief cleaning in the ultrasonic cleaner and a bit of oil revealed an awesome coin that looks to be in almost uncirculated condition! Every detail is present, but not sure how to proceed with any further cleaning because I don't want to lose any value. If it is indeed AU condition, it's worth a "pretty penny"!

Very nice find! It doesn't look like you are down to the patina. It still looks pretty gunked up. If that is the case and it was mine, it would be getting a hot peroxide soak. But if that is the porous metal surface, peroxide won't help much.

For the most part it feels pretty porous-sort of like a rusty bumper  But honestly, I have little to no experience with copper coins this old, so don't really know what to expect.

Great find Chris, 2 in 1 year is quite a feat. Congrats Wd

If that gunky looking stuff doesn't budge at all with a tooth pick, then likely it is already down to just the corroded metal.

congrats on the Braided Hair DOD , the picture is just a bit too dark to really tell what the coin's surface condition is but it looks to have some great lines .

Sorry for the "dark" pic, that's actually how the coin looks-almost completely black. I did manage to try a short lye dip and it did clean up a lot more of the corrosion without removing the patina, so it's more brown now instead of black. As for detail, there is basically zero wear on the coin. I can see the full LIBERTY print and every hair line looks pristine-even over the ear! I will try to get a better photo if I can of the detail.

Here's some more detailed photos after the soak in weak lye solution. Thinking about doing some more since there is more build-up on the back side.

Used a lye bath for a few hours and it made a marked improvement! The streaks of whatever it is that was discoloring the obverse were completely removed, as well as much more oxidation and other crap on both sides!

Great looking coin, don't know if any more cleaning will be of any help. My 1st LC has the same porous look and no matter what I tried, nothing helped any more.
