This morning I was going to hit the field where I found that nice pistareen a couple of weeks ago but decided I really needed to get in a good hike. Just too much holiday cheer this year. So I decided to hike out to a remote site that I've pounded in the past. The hike was the goal, anything I might find when I got there was just a bonus.

This is an older site. No stone foundations, just a couple of depressions in the ground. The youngest coin I've found there in the past was an 1803 LC. After poking around the scrub oak a while I hit another 1803 DB large cent.

The obverse is a bit toasty but the reverse is in great shape.

It's a small date, small fraction variety and it has the mumps. Looks like a match to the Sheldon 248.

So I got in a great hike with a copper as a bonus. Deer ticks still active.

:groovy:YES! It appears I may be ahead of Drew too ! That'll last for a week....maybe.

I wasn't worried about the reverse. It looked solid coming out of the ground. I wasn't sure about the obverse so I "dry cleaned" it with a tooth pick until I saw there was enough patina left to handle a peroxide soak. After that it was just some follow up work with Qtip and tooth pick. Rinse, dry and finished with some Renaissance Wax.

Beautiful DB! Slap some Ren wax on it.

Very nice! I have been wondering how best to preserve those largies I found. Coating in light oil looks ok for a short while but the coins are still dull looking. Looks like I will have to hunt down some of that Ren wax before I case the coins up.

Nice score on that DB. Did you post the same wording on FB about the no stone foundations, only depressions...? If I ever saw the post again I could actually figure you out from that group now. lol.

....yeah. I was trying to ramp that shhh up this past week and I couldn't get more than a wheat. A few others odds but nothing spectacular. grrrrr...

Mango, I don't do any metal detecting posting on FB. Must be someone else.

I def saw an 1803 in my newsfeed. Guess it was a common year. (not common enough for me to find, apparently...)

Yep, 1803 is very common. I do see them posted fairly frequently on other sites too.I think I have 5 or 6 or them.

Great job on nabbing that late (or early) season find Jeff! Cleaned up quite nicely. Good to see you "southern" guys can still get out and hunt. We're all done up here for a few months.

Thanks John. If you need a detecting fix before spring arrives in the Northern Kingdom, just come on down.
