Saturday in Ohio had a bit of warm up in temperature, climbing to near 60 degrees! Doug was able to get out this day and it was nice to have the full crew together again. We had three new spots to detect so we were anxious even though we knew it would be a bit muddy on top of the ground and frozen soil below. The first spot I found easy enough, looked good with brick and glass easily spotted. But…. Not any good signals spent about an hour there detecting and talking to the farmer who had given us permission on their fields. The next site was way out in a field after about an hour walking back and searching we did not have much luck, there were some signs and I was pretty sure I was on the right spot but the configuration of the field, dirt moved here and there made me believe that the house was buried. So on to the next again I was able to find it right away but massive iron and junk made us a bit impatient with the only “good” find a Model T valve stem cover I got on the way back to the car. I decided we would go to a old school house site where the last time we were there Diane and I got 6 Indian Heads and 6 early Wheat Cents. I told Doug before doing that I wanted to check the field across the road as I had looked at it the last time we were at this school house site and something…gut feeling….told me that there may have been something there even though none of the maps showed any building on the site. I had taken a quick look that day and saw just a few brick shards and a piece of glass. I checked it and found that this was owned by a farmer which already had given us permission for his fields a couple of which we had hunted before. We got there and walked into the field and just down a bit we started to find the signs and it was a fortuitous decision since we did really well!

Doug had a great day he found a line which gave up to him three Indians and a Seated Dime! It seemed as they were all in a row! Later he got an 1860 Fatty.

Diane had been finding some nice buttons when she got an 1880 Indian

I had found a couple of buttons and then I got a good signal coming in at 12-24 on the CTX when I dug my target and saw it was a coin I thought it must be a Fatty Indian or Flying Eagle, an 1863 Fatty it was and in decent shape too!

I dug a couple more buttons one I knew was an Eagle button and then I got a somewhat bouncy 12-38 signal and when I dug it I at first thought it was a Large Cent that had been cut and plow struck. On closer examination I could see the word “United” on it but instead of an outline of a wreath I thought I saw a wing, Diane confirmed that she thought it was a wing as well. A bit confused at what I had…other than knowing it was a cool find I pondered it. When time to go came and when we were walking back to the car it occurred to me what it may be and I told Doug and Diane “I think it is a Counterfeit Seated Quarter.” And that is what it is my second Counterfeit coin joining the Counterfeit Capped Bust Half I dug in 2014.

We dug some nice buttons I ended up with two Eagle Buttons and a decorated flat button that matched one that Diane had dug, altogether we had a great day digging and sharing a good time!
