Hey Diggers,
I got permission to detect at this house today. The town dates to 1850s. The home owner thought the house was "built around 1910..." I just nodded and thanked him for the permission. I'll post my finds on another thread. Thanks for looking and I look forward to hearing what you think about this house.

Can't see the foundation material-fieldstone, brick, concrete? But the tall narrower windows say the owner is likely about right.

Dave;
That red water pump in the back yard likely will have a date in the casting.
I've used that method before with success.

Chris makes a great point the narrow windows do suggest turn of the century era .

I would have thought a bit older. Guess I would have been wrong. LOL

I am sure it is before 1850. The chimney is centered in the house giving a strong indication that it was definitely around the middle 1800s. It was definitely built way before 1910. If there is any addition to the house, that may put the records to that date. Or it could have had a fire and rebuilt in 1910. I have one near me where the assessor says built 1900. It was the homestead the street was named for and was definitely on the 1868 map. One permission says 1820, but the owners researched and found it was built 1798. Another one I asked at, but her nephew does detecting with his son generated a "Not really" for me, but the assessor has it 1752. The owner says it was built in the 1600s, but incomplete records during the build time and the record of the addition in the back of the house was what was used for dating it. If there is brick for the foundation, puts it between 1800 and 1880... but more likely 1820 to 1880. One permission is 1800 with a brick foundation, but brick wasn't widely used until around 1820. I think that's the time when they started using colored clay- per the builders redoing my second 1820 permission house who are having to do masonry repair on the brick frame of the house.

I was leaning towards pre-civil war myself. Notice how the front door is off center. I think it originally had a double-door but the left door was removed (during a later renovation perhaps).

My house is the same on the tax roll. Built in 1884, I did a major renovation in 1997 and my assessment says 1997.

I would think a bit older than turn of the century based on the chimney but i'm never right on this stuff.

I think it is nearly 1890 - 1900 years old. As the with the look and model of the house it look very old. Now a days chimneys are of different type. If proper repair is done this home can be renovated. You can hire some specialist for chimney repair near long island (http://www.chimneygenie.com/), Nassau county or according to your choice.
