Trooper Bri and I decided to go back to the cabin site that was so good to us two weeks ago . This site had produced almost 90 buttons and some decent relics and half a copper total on the last trip and we thought we should get back there before all the briars and tall grass grow back . We hunted there all day at this one spot and i got to explore a bit more and found a couple of "hotspots" .

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2016/3168d767-dcd5-49dc-9c96-c7011fca4efd_zps11xxmcfx.jpg (http://s486.photobucket.com/user/del1786/media/2016/3168d767-dcd5-49dc-9c96-c7011fca4efd_zps11xxmcfx.jpg.html)

the bugs were out in force and the gnats and small black flies were biting me pretty good . I left my other hat (that has a built in bugnet) in the jeep as i didn't think they would be so bad yet :hairpulling:they were relentless :needadrink: :lol: I saw many other critters out as well , this garter snake was actually trying to eat a salamander

While the little red salamanders are very prevalent , you don't see the yellow spotted salamander very often , he really didn't mind posing for me while sunbathing

well the day was about more buttons ! i netted a total of 41 on this trip :happydance01::cheering: , not as many fancy or designed ones .Two nice un-crushed thimbles some nice shoe buckle fragments .

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2016/april%2023%20rd%20finds_zpsnrifqyvt.jpg (http://s486.photobucket.com/user/del1786/media/2016/april%2023%20rd%20finds_zpsnrifqyvt.jpg.html)

One of the hotspots i mentioned was in a small corner of a field where i pulled up about a dozen buttons . A thimble and two jaw harps came from this area too! The middle item in this picture with the jaw harps i believe is a bayonet scabbard tip :happydance01:

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2016/jaw%20harps%20and%20scabbard%20tip_zpsund7db0e.jpg (http://s486.photobucket.com/user/del1786/media/2016/jaw%20harps%20and%20scabbard%20tip_zpsund7db0e.jpg .html)

My coppers (2 for the day) , one was a very smooth "disk" with graffiti scratching of some kind it was fund right next to a cabin site mixed in the iron. its doubtful that i will get an id on this one .

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr228/del1786/2016/scrimshaw%20coin_zpsmjcuxhzb.jpg (http://s486.photobucket.com/user/del1786/media/2016/scrimshaw%20coin_zpsmjcuxhzb.jpg.html)

the other large cent copper was found pretty early on and wasn't very far from the cabin either , I knew it was a matron head type of large cent :yes:and told Brian that i bet is was an early (in the teens) one.

The initial cleaning proved my first thought that this was an early matron head type , ts starting to looks pretty good :cheering:

this was just after a quick tooth picking and i'll post a final picture after its waxing .

My day was a very good one but without spoiling it i'll just say Brian had a fantastic one and will always remember this site !!

Wow Dan...90+ buttons! Congrats. Makes me think the buttons came from multiple individuals working in the field there. If all those came from 1 or 2 folks, you'd have to think they would've searched for some of those. 1819 LC cleaned up nicely. Those scratches on the first LC aren't from your desperate digging for the coin are they? :hystericallaugh:

Great finds Del. I especially like the picture of the eastern garter snake trying to munch on the salamander (so well camouflaged you can barely see it). Don't you just wonder how so many buttons came to be at that site? Best wishes and HH, Dave.

:wow: Another stellar hunt Dan. Don't recall ever seeing two jaw harps dug in one day. Great detail left on the LC :congrats: Hard to tell but is that a blue spotted salamander in the snake's mouth?

John , all i know is sewing buttons must of been a 24 hour job back then

Dave , the garter snake was barely 8 inches long and i think this was a case of eyes bigger than his stomach  I'm proud to say that no animals were hurt in the making of this post as the salamander safely made free . but i did get a zoom in on them two .

As for the buttons , there were actually two cabin sites at this place and they stood from more than 30 years here as the button and coins dated it the site from 1780's to about the 1820's . Thanks Dave :notworthy:

Yes Jeff , the two jaw harps were a nice surprise and very small (possibly trade era ones) . i believe it is a blue spotted salamander (very pale blue) but he did get away "scott free" . Thank you sir

Great hunt, sounds like a lot of fun digging all that. Congrats!

Chris , Trooper Bri had the finds of the day !! he was a very excited individual !! thank you .

here was a closer look at the snake with the salamander in his mouth .

Incredible site you have there. The bugs have been terrible as of late, but I'm sure the finds made their attacks worth it

in some ways it is Drew but "the button site" is called that because it produced over 400 buttons and more coins (about 15 ) but this site has coughed up a GW and many more dandy types. Thanks Drew

Al , there is so much fallen or cut logs and i'm sure there is a bunch more goodies hidden . I'm tempted to drive the jeep and start winching the logs out of the way ! :lol:Thanks

WTGF Dan! That's an amazing spot!

Thank you Roger , it gives me hope that there are still unhit sites you just have to find them .
