Got out for a couple of field hunts this weekend, the first turned up a few things a Shield Nickel, nice flat button and a new permission. I went out to check on a site for us to hunt on Sunday and I thought I figured out generally where this would be I then returned to find another spot that earlier we had not much luck finding. We checked this spot out before and I was sure I had the right spot then, a few brick shards and bits of glass….but no signals. That day we looked at a spot that “looked” like a likely spot for a house and we found a few things that indicated that it was so. Now the maps did not show that a house had been here but I have ran into that before. I checked the first spot and again could not get any decent signal so I walked out to the other spot and found a few things. I was not sure how long I would stay here as the promised sunshine and milder temperatures seemed to be a figment of the weather mans imagination. I did get a repeatable 12-09 to 12-10 signal and was pleased that the target that came up was a decent 1867 Shield Nickel always a welcome sight! At another spot later I got a very nice flat button and a few other relics.

Sunday afternoon Doug, Diane and I went out to check out a site that I had gotten permission on just the previous day, and while not as old as some sites we hunt it turned up some good things. While there I saw something really neat; now I am familiar with seeing a lot of hawks and turkey buzzards while out in the fields but this bird was something entirely different. The stream that runs beside this field is bordered by trees and I saw this huge bird rise up and soar above the tree line, I called out to Doug and he saw it too then. I said “I think that is an Eagle” he concurred and just then it pivoted and we could see the bright white head feathers! This is the first Bald Eagle that I have ever seen in the wild; they are not a common occurrence in our area!

This field gave up some neat things, Doug got a 1917 Wheat Cent and a 1904 Indian and 6 toy cars! My first find was an elaborate drawer pull that still had one of the fixing screws still in it and a bit later I got a very nice Ohio Southern Railroad Baggage Tag, this railroad operated between 1881 and 1889!
We then moved on to the site that was our prime objective and this involved quite a hike. The site was close to ¾ of a mile from the road according to Doug’s fit bit. And this turned out to be worth the effort. Typical farm detritus was in abundance showing we had nailed the site. Diane scored first with a decent 1867 Indian Head which is a scarcer date.

After that Doug took over his first good find was an 1864 Two Cent Piece and that was followed within a couple of minutes by an 1864 Indian Head that was partially exposed on top of the ground. Very nice when they give up without a fight! He later added a 1913 Buffalo Nickel which we could tell by the Buffalo standing on a mound instead of the line a nice type 1 of that date. I continued scuffling finding bits of brass and copper but at last I got my keeper. I was getting a 12-40- to 12-41 signal a little scratchy but a good solid tone, first thing that came out of the hole was a square nail and I thought….no way did that give enough of a iron false to be the signal and another scoop of dirt turned up a nice 1865 Two Cent Piece. So we all had our keepers and it made the long walk back to the car not so bad.

Congrats on the 2 cent piece and that RR tag is fantastic. It's been years since either of those have found their way into my keeper pouch. Makes that hike well worth it

Tons of winners there Tony! If I had to choose one I'd go with the baggage tag...even over the 2cent. Why do you find so many marbles??:envious:

Well maybe because someone told me I had lost mine so I am on the lookout for them. :shocked03:

Well i I used to hunt for Indian artifacts so my eye is tuned to see things that are man made!

Nice assortment of early coins Tony. The dates are so small on shield nickels it seems they are always impossible to read. Good job on getting one with a legible date! Bets wishes and HH, Dave.
