Recent relics

I have been out detecting recently but the old coins have eluded me. I have made a few relic finds though. I think this is my first relic section post! Woohoo!

I took a buddy of mine to a field site last weekend. I got a few wheat pennies and my buddy got a nice indian from 1890. It was nice to see him find an old one. I hit this spot with my son last year and we found 3 marbles on the surface. This time I found 7 of them!! kinda cool! The home site was occupied until the 1960's so some of these probably are not that old.

Last night I hit some city owned lots where homes once stood. I did not find much but I did find the back of a silver pocket watch. I thought it was just another "house part" but as I rubbed the dirt off I thought I saw a hallmark. The other side is completely smooth. I am not sure who the maker was but it is silver which made my hunt.

Below is a pic of what I think is a shoe buckle frame. It is about 4 inches long. What do you experts think? I found it about 4 years ago in a park that dates to the 1930's but the area has history dating back to the 1700's.

Nice finds. Especially like the buckle, yes I think that is an old one. Seeing the Lion hallmark on the watch back makes me believe its sterling. I used to collect marbles (way back when) and its always a treat to find them.

You found the buckle in Michigan ?? :wow: I'd be detecting that area a lot , it is a late 1700's era shoe buckle , a very nicely ornate one too :smitten:. the pocket watch back piece is definitely British although i'm not familiar with the initials . It looks at least a 100 years old or more

Yes, some of my latest research shows European activity in the Midwest in the mid 1600s onwards, especially along waterways. As I read the histories, we could just as easily been speaking French instead of English.

Great looking buckle and indeed old! That definitely belongs in this section! There's a few sites out there which may help identify your British silver hallmark. Here's one link for DL hallmarks that may point you in the right direction, though you'll have to do some more research as it's not evident from the page which maker your pocket watch back piece is from (http://www.silvercollection.it/englishsilvermarksXDLLL.html). Nice buckle ! That is a nice find anywhere. That is a great find west of the Ohio River.

Nice finds. I like the buckle. Good you can pull something that old in MI. As to what I see, the lion like that was used around 1855-1860 time frame, but the information on the D.L. maker negates that time frame. The letters look more like the Dorothy Langlands with the dots more centered, but a pocket watch I would figure would be more around 1880's to 1920's in time with all the train conductors.
