Got out for a few hours this morning. Went to a site that I had hit pretty hard over the years. They are getting ready to build houses where I access the site, so I figured I would pay it one last visit. I wandered around a bit then decided to see what I could sniff out from the iron patch.

I was surprised at the size of some of the targets that I (and other detectorists) had missed over the years. Iron masking will do that to you.

Sniffed out a few buttons including a 2-piece Artillery Eagle button. The back mark says "R&W Robinson" and that put it in the 1836 to 1848 range from what I can gather.

It's not in great shape but I will happily keep it. Nice parting gift from a site that had just given up mostly just colonial stuff in the past. :)

Great job sniffing out the goods from the iron. That button is not the prettiest but your hunting skills saved it. Hope you can find another way into that site.

Nice find, Jeff. I've even been surprised how on the SD videos on YouTube shows how VDI can change depending on direction you hit the target. Independent of masking, but shows how sometimes you can easily miss things.

Lol, Dan. Don't get me wrong, I hear it is a nice machine, but that's the same thing Matt P (YTC) uses when I have taken him to some cellars. He still finds the ox shoes and so does Keebs from SD using his Deus. I don't think any machine can avoid finding those.

Thanks Jim. You are exactly right. Even the Deus with its blazing recovery speed can't hit a small target masked by iron if you swing the coil over them lengthwise. If you swing the coil over them crosswise, it's a LOT easier to unmask the good target.

Deus or no Deus, if your machine is tuned to ignore ox shoes at a colonial site, you are going to be missing a lot of good targets.
