Hi all,
Spent all day Thursday travelling to sites I've been hoping to hit for a while. First stop was Waukegan Illinois where I started with the beach. Very slim pickings there. Not even much clad or trash. I had hoped to try the lake, but with 10 to 15 foot waves it was impossible. It was a pretty spectacular sight though seeing the waves actually going over the break wall! But this also limited how close I could get to the water and made about a third of the beach impossible.
Waukegan only has one park shown on the old maps which of course I visited. Lots of clad, but only picked out 2 old wheaties and a .32 auto case.
The next stop was a few blocks away at another small park. Again, not muck at this park other than clad. But this park also has a stream running through a deep ravine. I checked it out and found it just loaded with old broken bottles, stoneware, etc which indicated to me a lot of history. Unfortunately that history didn't include anything worth keeping.
Next stop was to try the beach in Winthrop Harbor. Turns out its not much of a beach, little used and mostly under water due to the waves. Only 1 quarter found here.
So it was back to Wisconsin once again, but this time to an inland lake. I went to a private beach where I used to live, since it's now out of season. The beach had the usual bit of clad and toy cars. The lake itself was totally calm so decided to try a water hunt. The water was unexpectedly lean of targets. A few coins in the main area only. But in the weedy area in the muck along the edge I scored a nice silver ring! Unusual that it had no markings but it did ring up as a 12-47 (silver).
Last stop on the way home I decided to go back to island hopping in the park parking lot again for a while. No silver this time, but I got 5 more wheaties including a low mintage 1915. Also found an odd huge copper disc. The other wheats for the day were a 27, 39, 41, 44, 54D, and 57D. Total clad for the day was $7.18.
