Yesterday was a hunt that i had planned for a week or two . I had a friend (Donnie B.) come up from New York to hit some cellar sites with Heavymetal nut (Dave ) and Thiltzy (Todd) , Trooper Bri was invited but unfortunately Brian couldn't make it .

After parking the vehicles we set off into the woods at daybreak and found the first cellar around 45 minutes later . It was a nice hilly site with lots of room to swing.

After and hour here we could tell someone had beat us to this beautiful area . I caught Donnie in action working a patch of ground just behind the chimney pile of the cellar .

This picture was just as we arrived and did I catch Todd in a strange practice :confused::thinkingabout::dontknow: Todd praying to the colonial spirits ? Maybe this is why he's so good at what he does ?? :lol:

We were here at this site for a couple of hours and it was slow going , i did get a lead square perhaps used as a gaming die :happydance01:and a large dandy button that i found out later it had a great design.

The small second cellar was just up the hill it was very small with almost no room for 4 coils but i did pull up a broken tombac , a pewter button and an ok knob. The third site looked great :shocked02: it was very remote and no roads or paths to it and had some decent area to swing. If you look hard Dave is digging at the far end in between the two large close trees.

I did find this small coin :yahoo:and a button at this site , one that i don't see very often , British farthing :smitten:. this site did cough up a couple of finds for everyone but was obviously detected very hard by someone :hairpulling:

The 4th site was incredibly trashy and seemed like it was used as an early 1900's era dump from all the tin can pieces and scrap flat stock iron laying all over. as you can see the ferns were still thick in this area and was easy to tangle up the coils .

Donnie wanted a picture before we left , this site was a bit frustrating due to the tough conditions and lack of older finds, it was already after noon time . time to locate another site .

Just before we packed up Todd shouted to us (as Dave and I were discussing something he found) and took a quick picture . Is it me or does it look like Dave and I was in the middle of a "drug transaction" :rofl::lol: especially with Donnie trying to hide his face from the camera behind me .:lolsign: way to go Todd !!

You always see something odd or a patch of bright color in the woods , this is "chicken of the woods" a bright colored type of mushroom that i've heard tastes like chicken when fried up!!

This was cellar # 7 and our final one to detect just before dark . we hiked a bit more than 6 miles before getting here . we were tired , frustrated as all of these sites seem so depleted of finds . Luckily my jeep was pre-parked a few hundred yards earlier that morning so we didn't have to make the long walk back .

My meager finds for this hunt , minus the junk iron , shotgun shells .22 bullet casings . I did get a very small ok knob that didn't make its way into this last shot.

I was happy to see all the fanciness on the large dandy button and the British Farthing turned out to be a 1749 KGII , only the second farthing i've ever recovered.

I wanna thank Donnie , Dave and Todd for a great time .its awesome to share this hobby with such like minded and dedicated colonial detectorists , it was a fun day :grin: gentlemen:notworthy:and the weather was perfect!:groovy:

It's so funny that you say "meager finds" but that 1749 Farthing would make my millennium! :yes: I would trade that for a bucket full of the wheat cents and mercury dimes that we find here in Illinois.

Thanks Chris , I agree just being out in the woods with perfect weather and great friends is a blessing . The finds were just a generous added perk !

Those chicken mushrooms are good. But what you really want to keep an eye for over the next couple weeks are the Hen of the Woods (maitake). Fantastic eating.

Good work . From the look of things I think it is getting safe to say that Connecticut cellar sites are a finite resource that are about used up. Your state with the group of what seems like full time hunters with Youtube channels vacuuming the region dry. The future sadly holds the type of "keep at it day" that you had to get those few remaining items . But it's the same through out New England... the glory days are gone when it comes to finding not only virgin sites but to finding a site that hasn't been pounded to death are fading rapidly. Just a commentary on one aspect of the hobby.

My machine is getting ready for shipment to White's... so I'll be back to the BH for the time being. Heard Martin had just bought one with a newer serial than mine and they automatically shipped him a new one saying the early 2015 had an issue. Mine was like first out from Kellyco.

If you folks from New England area run out of colonial sites to dig it will be a sad day. I love looking at all the oldie goldies you pull out of them Early America sites.

New York has some pre-1800 sites but they are mostly underneath a home , street or parking lot.
