I know it's hard to date a horse shoe but does anybody want to chime in? I found this near an area where there was significant troop movement during the Civil War. This doesn't mean that this is a shoe from then, but I wouldn't be too suprised. The shoe isn't very big but has at least 10 nails in it and no toe clip. I did find a rectangular nail not too far from there but a good ways removed from the path where the shoe was.

It looks like a mule shoe from the first pic. I don't know how to date them.

I wouldn't know a mule shoe from a horse shoe. I know very little about them except that there hasn't been a radical shift in how they are made in a long time. It's a skill to make them and put them on and I am under educated to figure this out. Perhaps it's good luck to find it and I'll just accept that!

I see the difference in your photo. I suppose mules were the animal of choice for moving supplies and artillery rather than horses in a lot of cases. I am going to go back and explore some sites that I think hold a great deal of potential and cant wait for the weather to cooperate with me. It's been raining for the prior 2 days and I'm itching to get out and do something.
