Hey guys I live in California and all the old coins I find is early 1900's, I was wondering how old your oldest coin is just to compare to other places.

I have seen a few hobbyists in California show off some early 1800's coins and late 1700's Spanish silver coins as many places were first settled in the 1700's by the Spanish .

My oldest coin I found was just last year and it was a barely recognizable Lois XIV French Liard that dates 1655 here is the coin and what it looked like new

My personal oldest is an 1841 Large Cent. Pretty good for the Midwest, especially considering the area I found it only got its first settler in 1837.

Yes, my city was founded in 1790 but mostly built over, it is sad that relics could lay right under some Mc Donald's down town. Luckily I should be heading down to Virginia for a vacation, I am bringing my detector for some detecting.

It's a shame how so much history is lost to "progress". Only about 2 hours North of where I live the history of European contact goes back to 1634. Of course almost all traces of the next 300 years are long gone.

I have a few of those 1650s Liards.

How do you know it's an 1814, is it a certain version only minted that year?

That's a good question. When I found it I posted it on the forum and a member figured it out for me.
Here's what he had to show me.

My oldest is a 1776 1/2 reale. Found it in Indiana. Also found an 1822 1/2 dollar and 1834 CB dime. Those are my best finds so far.5822658227

My oldest coin was found here in Illinois. An 1806 KGIII half penny. I found it in a yard that was once part of the farm belonging to first governor of the Illinois Territory way back in 1812. The historical marker is literally one block away (of course you can't detect there).

Would have to be one of my 3 Draped Bust LCs (all partial or no dates), so 1796 to 1807.
