I think that is the back of a two piece button. Is there any writing?

No writing, Dave....and there never is. They're usually found at super old sites. They are deeper in concave than the normal 1800s two pieces...almost as deep as a ball button.

I've found those as well & figured it had a light brass top that rusted away. Will be interesting to see what others chime in with.

most were brazed two piece brass to form a button some had two holes (for gases to escape ) but some didn't , they are pretty old buttons Drew

Thanks, guys! Dan, have you ever found a complete one?

both halves yes but not whole , I think because they don't have the holes to let the hot gases out the integrity of the button is weaker or the hot brazing doesn't adhere as well so I see a lot of these type separated more .
