I got out to a hay field this weekend to do a little testing with a new coil and what a surprise I got. The field is level and has a stream for one boarder and is what I would call a natural camp site. I was marking targets with flags and then testing the new XP Deus Elliptical against my existing 11" coil. I actually found this sword with two different coils and about 6 holes to get it all in about a 10' area. My first call was to Dan about the sword as he is my personal answer man extreme. We are thinking Rev War era French Rapier style sword. These are the thin personal defence type sword fighting type of sword not the thick Cavalry slashing type of sword. I'm super pleased to have found this and a lucky hunter.

Well done Todd! Any markings that you can see? Bet the blade or parts of it are there.

I have been asking sword people and posting on sword forums. The consensus seems to be that the sword is most likely a French "small sword" type 1720-70 and would have been carried buy an officer in the revolutionary war. They aren't surprised that the blade is gone due to the 200 years possibly in the ground and that it is a small personal defense sword.
There is a documented forced march of Hessian soldiers right though where this was found.
