View Full Version : South of the border

I was lucky enough to spend an entire day south of the border with a great bunch of guy’s. We hunted several different locations and covered a lot of ground. The sky was gray all day long with drizzle here and there. The wind was light and carried a bit of a chill with it. The ground was moist and that made for easy digging. That’s a good thing since the soil in that area seems really dense and compacted. We spent the entire day out doing one of the thing's we all like doing best. I had a pretty good day and a good hunt. I dug a lot of trash targets in attempt to find the good ones in disguise. As always I dug a handful of clad and for a change I was lucky enough to swing my coil over some pretty nice targets. During this hunt I took home a 1956 d Wheat Penny, a 1898 V Nickel, a 1936 Buffalo Nickel, and a sweet 1895 Barber Quarter. What makes this such a sweet find is (for those who don’t know) that Oklahoma was formed by the combination of Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory on November 16, 1907. Sorry about the pics. I'm looking into resolving this issue.

You didn't say anything about finding a V nickel! Where'd you get that at? And that Barber quarter is FANTASTIC! The pictures look good, but in person I can tell everyone that coin is absolutely FABULOUS. Every little stripe in the shield is there. Great finds Dave!

I couldn't tell what I had found until I tried to clean the V up a bit. I found it at the second stop of the day along with the wheat.

At Plataville? If so, that's a very good indicator.

Dave dude! That Barber is awesome. I agree with Dale. Even in person it's even more impressive. Here's current PCGS value for it. Having actually seen it I would grade it as MS-55 - at least if not 60.

Great finds, I LOVE the silver.

I think you have exceeded your out-of-state silver hunting permit. ;)

Jason, I had to pay my dues for that coin all summer long.

I wish that I could have taken a better picture. But I have to agree with you Gary, At least a MS-55.

Absolutely gorgeous Dave! I agree with Gary and Dale...the picture doesn't do that thing justice! I swear you took that beauty out of it's wrapper and dropped it in front of you when no one was looking. Just kidding! Nice work. thumbsup01 I bet the V nickel was a nice suprise for you.

Yes, I found the V at Plataville.

That makes three wheats, one 1898 V and two silver dimes just on the edge of Plataville. Dude, we really got to get into there soon.
